It's June!  For this month, I would like to do a song for the week.  I would do a song of the day, but this semester I think it will be easier to summarize my weeks instead of doing it day by day like I have in the past.

My weekend was laid-back and I got some work done.  I'm going to try to take on some fitness challenges and we will see what kind of results I get out of it.  I got some PAWS kittens on Saturday!  I can't believe in the 2.5 years that I've been here I've resisted adopting one....there is still time however!

So, we had no LAM all week, except for Monday.  Instead we had a lot of VPF class....almost too much. It was all veterinary law lectures and it was very disorganized and the professors kept bickering and making fun of each other. On Monday, we had it from 8-11am, Tuesday from 8-10am, and on Wednesday from 8-11am.  I know it's a good thing to know, but there is also so much information and every state is different, that's it's not logical to learn all of this at the moment.  Plus, we have blocks on Monday, so that's where my mind is, not how and when I will be sued.
This week started grand rounds for the 7th semester, but as 6th semester we have to attend and answer clicker questions as part of our surgery class.  It will also give us an idea of what we will need to do next semester. Grand rounds is basically where you are given a topic and you have to do research on that topic and then present it in front of other students and professors.
My aspetic exam is on Friday.  I have to make sure I scrub in correctly and basically do everything sterility up until cutting into the "patient".
Steps:
1) With hair not exposed and mask on, unwrap the outer wrap of the instrument tray, gloves, and gown.
2) Scrub/rinse hands
3) Unwrap inner wrap of gown and wipe hands in downward motion and not going back up
4) Place on gown by only touching the inside and allow technician to tie you in.  Make sure your fingers aren't exposed
5) Place gloves on with sleeves, still not exposing your hands.  Make sure gown stays around the palm of your hand
6) Unwrap inner instrument pack.  Make sure not to have gown touch table at any point
7) Drape patient with quarter drapes making sure the drapes are 2cm away from incision line.  Start on nondominant side and move, without your back being exposed to table, to other side
8) Place towel clamps in corners
9) Technician will hand you large drape.  Instruct them how to open it over the patient.
10) Place towel clamps over the first towel clamps
11) Grab suture and scalpel blade from technician without turning away from patient
12) Place blade on scalpel handle and put down on sterile tray
13) Grab saline bowel for technician to fill
14) Do all of this in 15mins

Friday I am going to dinner for my friend's birthday to Rock Lobster, however other than that, my weekend will consist of studying for blocks on Monday...didn't I just do this??

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate the heat here.... this place ever froze over it would literally be hell freezing over.  I would kill for some snow right now.

My neighbor brought me some cupcakes!  I don't even know the last time I had sweets, so I pretty much devoured them within 10mins of her brining them over....these are on my diet right?

6th Semester!

Onto 6th semester!  I am so relieved and excited to be moving onto my next semester!  I am that much closer to finishing! 7 months left on the island! This is also the hard part of the semester, where you lose friends due to this demanding curriculum.  That part will never get easier.

This semester I will be taking Small Animal Medicine 2, Large Animal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, and Veterinary Professional Fountains 2.  I will have a similar lecture schedule that I had last semester.

 

Classes are interesting so far and I still enjoy my schedule.  I can already tell which classes I will have to work harder in (Large Animal Medicine)  I have my aspectic technique demonstration and practice on Friday.  This is just making sure everything is sterile and not contaminated when performing surgery. We are tested on it in a few weeks and it will be part of our Rossie.

I think I've said this before, but these first two weeks of the semester are always the most fun.  There is minimal material to study and lots of fun events.  This week was the semester olympics (Tues - volleyball, Wed - soccer, Thurs - kickball, Fri - football).

This weekend there is PAWS adoption day, Mr Ross and a catamaran trip.  I will probably stop by the PAWS adoption day and see my little cuties!  It is a relief to not have to be the one in charge of it this semester with my course load.  We've had a few Mr Ross practices this week, which was very beneficial considering I'm in all three of our skits.  It should be a lot of fun! Saturday was my last adoption day.  It was bittersweet since I've been in this position for 5 semesters. Luckily, one of my favorite cats was adopted out, so I was happy to see that. That night was the leadership awards dinner that I was able to attend for PAWS and AAV.

Sunday was a relaxing day at the beach.

I helped set up for Dr. Ketzis's chicken research again this semester.  I unfortunately won't be able to help as much as I have in the past, but I can still do a few small things here and there.  I met with my anesthesia professors to see how I can improve in that class.  At dance class, we completed the "Hips Don't Lie" dance.  There are only three more weeks of that class left!

I ran some errands in the afternoon and packed in prep for my CO trip!

My flight to CO!  I was privileged with flying first class all the way to Dever.  Once in Dever, we rented a car and drove to Loveland where our hotel and conference was located.  We ended up getting in around 1am.

We were up early for registration and breakfast from the hotel.  I helped cheer on our volleyball team that morning and had a CPR wet lab in the afternoon.  The lab was more lecture style, so I only got a little out of it.  That night was the opening ceremony and pub crawl.  We went to several bars in Fort Collins, including a place that actually had a limit on margaritas because they made them so strong.  We again ended up getting to bed around 1-2am.

I was up early yet again for a small animal dentistry lab where we practiced extractions on a cadaver. I grabbed a box lunch and went to two lectures that afternoon; one on Leadership in the 21st century with a speaker I've heard before, and the other on medical acupuncture.  That night was "casino night" where they provided food, drinks, a band, and a few casino games.

I attended two lectures in the morning; one on how to use positive reinforcement training on zoo animals and the other one prion research (thanks to mom who wanted me to go).  A few of us did a little bit of shopping before my exotics cytology and hematology lab.  That night was the closing ceremony where there was a speaker, awards, dinner, and drinks.  We checked out the hotel bar briefly before I went to bed before our early morning.

A long day of traveling.  We left the hotel at 2:30am, drove to Denver, flew to Dallas, flew to Miami, and then back to St Kitts.  I got back around 8pm.  Now time to play catch up!

On Saturday, PAWS had a SUP rely race which was a huge hit.  Hopefully we will put together another one next semester.  There was a ton of other PAWs stuff that I had to deal with this weekend as well...almost done, almost done.  I then spent the rest of the weekend studying for my exams this week!

 I had one class and then EVS: suturing of the body wall. I ended up canceling belly dance to give myself more time to study.  That's ok though, because there is still four weeks of class, so I will finish our current dance and then do another drum solo.  I also registered for 6th semester!!

ANS exam was today.  Exams here can be so frustrating because a lot of times I feel like I don't read the question right or I get something backwards in my head.  You can feel so confident coming out of the exam and then while looking up the questions you realize you got the answer backwards or something.  :Sigh:  I moved on to studying for SAM, and took a break that night to go out to dinner.

We had our anesthesia exam review and I then took my friend to the hospital because she broke her tow two weeks ago and it hasn't been healing.  The hospital was an experience on it's own from waiting three hours for them to tell her it wasn't broken, the ants of the sterile sheets, the waiting room where we had to keep track of who was next, to the concession stands in the lobby.  Hopefully I will never have to go there for myself.  It was then back to studying for the rest of the night.

There was a VBMA speaker at lunch, which means I have finished my Gold certification!

I have my SAM exam and a moonlight paddleboarding tour tonight!

This weekend:   Saturday is my last PAWS adoption day!  It's very bittersweet, but I will be grateful for the free time.  I did PAWS for 5 semesters, so it will definitely be strange not being involved.  There is a SAVMA leadership award ceremony/dinner that I got invited to for being an officer in two clubs.  Alex and I are hosting game night, which we've been wanting to have, so that should be fun.  Sunday, I will be lounging on the beach all day for some much needed relaxation.

Feeling Like A Doctor

It's hard to keep coming up with different "themes" for the month, since the day to day life in vet school is pretty routine (class, study, try to relax before next exam, repeat).  I have to find a way to keep you interested in reading! For March, I'm going to do a different quote everyday.  I have a lot of quotes that mean a lot to me, so each day I will share one with you!  I get a lot of my quotes off of Pinterest, so I apologize if I don't know who said a lot of the them.

This past weekend, I brought two cats into PAWS, one of which is currently at my place learning tricks.

I gave the avian talk and performed my first canine ansethesia!  My group and I had to calculate the drug dose for the premediations and induction agents and administer those drugs, while knowing the effects of those drugs.  We put a catheter in, intubated, did different breathing methods, monitored, had to figure out if a value wasn't right what to do about it, and then woke the dog back up!  Starting to feel like a doctor more and more everyday!  I had belly dance that night, where I taught the class a new choreography because the girls are learning so fast, that I have to come up with more dances for them!  We also got our schedules for next semester...ahh it's so scary and exciting at the same time!

Happy Mardi Gras! Normal day of class, where I was done at noon.  I went and picked up four kittens to bring into PAWS.  They are afraid of me, but I'm sure once they see I'm not a threat, they will feel more comfortable. They are pretty adorable though!

Totally didn't realize that today was Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent, so I didn't get a chance to go to church. There was a VBMA speaker at lunch and that afternoon.  They are great speakers and talk about subjects that we just aren't going to learn about in school, such as hospice, the art of euthanasia, and how to have a life once you start working.  After next week I will have completed my Gold certification!  Very exciting!  I also had my ophthalmic lab this afternoon where we looked at eyeballs!  I had dinner at Carambola this evening and it was amazing!  Probably the best food that I've had on this island so far.

I dealt with A LOT of PAWS stuff  today.  The kittens had their appointment, so I had to bring them in and then give them to their new fosters. This will probably be my last litter of kittens that I bring in!  I usually let the fosters name them, but I wanted to name the last ones!  They are Ottley, Serendipity (Dips), Timothy, and Calypso.  All named after places around the island.
 The woman that gave me the cats this weekend now wants one of them back, which we normally don't do, since we have them sign a form over to us and everything.  She gave him up because she is going back home, but will be back in the summer.  SInce PAWS hasn't really invested anything in him yet, then I gave her the ok to take him back.  However, now since I've been fostering him, I have to now help her find a foster until she comes back in the summer.  I normally wouldn't have a problem helping her, but it's just bad timing with everything else that I should be doing right now (maybe like studying). Then I got more emails about more cats that want to come into our program.  There was a VBMA speaker at lunch about The Art of Euthanasia. I then went to the DI TA sessions and then home to study!

I have two VBMA speakers today.  I feel incredibly behind in my studying, so I will be staying in tonight to study for my two exams, ANS and SAM, next week.

This weekend PAWS is putting together a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard)  relay fundraiser along with one of the professor here.  I will be working some of that and then studying for ANS and SAM for the rest of the time.

Long Days, Short Week

Long days, but a short week!  Life Of A Grad Student

All of my shows are premiering this week!

On Monday, I had no breaks from 8-5:30pm including a lunch meeting and a tutor.  Since I didn't get much done on Sunday, I had to do laundry and cleaning that night.  I also was constantly checking/writing emails for some new PAWS cats we are bringing in.

3 hours of pharm on Tuesday.....ugh! So again, no breaks from 8-4pm.  VBMA meeting at lunch (free food!)  in order to start on my gold certification.  I got my silver two semesters ago, but they are now doing a gold certification, so I'm going to try to earn that.  You basically just have to attend lectures for certain business categories and earn credits toward this certification that looks great on a resume and helps you learn a little about the business end of veterinary medicine.

Wednesday, we had our exam review from our exams on Friday, PAWS meeting for new members at lunch (free food!), and then a ClinPath tutor, and another goodbye dinner ( :( hopefully the last one) that night at Rituals Sushi.

I went to morning classes on Thursday, but I had a flight to ILto catch for cousin Joey and Danielle's wedding weekend!  Of course, don't forget the Hokie game that night too!!

Finals Prep

This weekend I took care of my car's brake pads, which were apparently very low and starting to make a scratching noise.  I hung out at the beach and pool for a bit on Saturday as well as studied.  I had a PAWS kitten that I was watching for a few days until I could get it into a foster home.  I now have to arrange for all the cats to have fosters over the break if their current foster isn't staying here.

Monday morning started off great with me waking up later than I suppose to because I was suppose to help medicate the aviary birds, then my car wouldn't start so I had to call Ross security to come jump start it.  However, strangely enough, all he did was touch the cables to the battery without actually charging it, and my car started.  Luckily, I was still able to make it to the gym and mediate the birds.  We had our last animal behavior class today (yay) and our final is next week (boo).
FACT OF THE DAY:  Vets need to document and take pictures of everything because those forensics can come into play in court cases.  You can determine bullet pathways, electrocution, deaths by fire (if animal was dead before or after fire?), poisoning (intentional?), drownings, etc. (Pathology)

Surgery club had a lunch meeting of Subway and we got our club t-shirts.  I'm not a huge fan of the saying on it, because it really isn't something I would wear, but now I have a new gym shirt!
FACT OF THE DAY:  West Nile Meningencephalitis' main host is birds; mammals are considered dead end or incidental hosts.  It was been isolated in at least 37 mosquito species.  (Virology)

Our schedule was switched around a bit on Wednesday, with Viro at 11am so that we can finish early and have more time to study next week.  I volunteered to help give eye meds to a sick bird that the aviary club faculty adviser is treating.
FACT OF THE DAY: If a muscle is black, in order to determine what caused the color change you can do a paper towel test.  If the paper towel turns black it's melanosis; if it turns red, it's hemorrhage. (Pathology)

It's August! No more facts of the day, plus it's finals time, so there isn't a lot of new material anyway.  Hope you enjoyed them though!  I might do them again later.

On Friday, we have the PAWS supply sale and a virology review.  The volleyball tournament starts today as well.  Is it bad that I'm secretly hoping that we don't win so that I have more time to study?

This weekend will be nothing but studying for finals!!  We are having a goodbye dinner for a friend, who is transferring, so that will be my study break.  I might even hit up the Marriott breakfast, that I have been craving.

One month to go

We had a very successful adoption day with three dogs and three cats adopted!  I just hope we can keep that streak up next semester!  On Saturday night, a group of us went to see Despicable Me 2.

I registered for 4th semester on Monday!  So exciting!

There was a talk at lunch about how to become a board certified surgeon.  I'm not really interested in being a surgeon, but I'm in the surgery club and there was free food.  What they served

FACT OF THE DAY: Foxes, coyotes, jackals, wolves, and certain rodents are the most suceptible animals to Rabies.  Dogs, sheep, goats, horses, and nonhuman primates are moderately susceptible.  Birds are not susceptibility due to their high body temperature. (Virology)

Wednesday was a busy day that started off with monsters invading the RUSVM Student Union! In support of the Josh project, blue semester (4th semester) won and had the teachers dressed as members of the Monster Mash crew. Mad Scientist, Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein, Wolfman, and the Mummy.  In the picture below from left to right is Dr. Reich (my old physio teacher), Dr. Castillo, Dr. Lizzagiana (my current pharm teacher), Dr. Soto (my current bact teacher), and blue semester class rep Andrew in place of Dr. Verma.   Here's a video.

At lunch there was a avian talk from Dr. Thomas Tully from LSU where pizza was provided and he did another talk at 5pm about exotic case presentations where dinner was provided.  It was then back to studying!!
FACT OF THE DAY: The campus cats are getting braver by the day and enjoy playing with backpacks, stealing your food, and trying to catch fish in the indoor aquarium.

 

 

 

I had my Bact exam on Thursday and another avian talk at lunch.  I'm glad that was the last midterm of the semester because I'm feeling burnt out and I still have finals to study for.....:sigh:
 FACT OF THE DAY:  Picornaviridae is the virus that causes Foot and Mouth Disease, which actually has a very low (less than 5%) mortality.  It's a big deal because it causes such a large economic impact. (Virology)

TGIF!  I'm celebrating a friend's birthday by going on an afternoon dive with her, but I will probably be missing volleyball.

This weekend will be spent  preparing for finals and relaxing at Palm Gardens pool all day Saturday.

The Life Of A Hermit

This weekend at Adoption Day, we adopted out three dogs, and possibility three cats.  Sadly, the rest of the weekend I was just on campus studying.

Monday was my Pharm and Animal Behavior exam with an hour between the two.  So I celebrated being done with them by studying for my viro exam.
Tuesday and Wednesday I was up until 1am studying and the stress was starting to hit because because I really wasn't tired.  I had to actually force myself to sleep.  Everyone is so stressed about this exam because we only have two exams in this class and it's 50% of our grades....talk about pressure!

Viro exam on Thursday!  I was of course exhausted the rest of the day, but wasn't able to go home and get a nap until 5pm because of classes.
Friday and this weekend there will plently of sleep, relaxation, maybe some beach time, and sleeping!  Saturday is the pink semester Woofstock event.  I will be helping to work that and of course playing with all the dogs!  Mid semester break is already here!  I can't believe it's the middle of the semester already; I feel like we just started.  On Monday, a group of us are going to do the crater hike!  I'm very excited to cross that off the St. Kitts bucket list!

It Never Ends

Monday morning, we started our research set up by labeling papers and fecal tubes and rubber banding them together.  At lunch I meet with my bact teacher in order to go over my exam and see what I got wrong.  I stayed on campus to study that night, which I will probably be doing all week.
We had another Woodstock meeting on Tuesday morning before viro class.  At lunch, we had our first research information meeting giving the qualifications of the study for anyone who wants to bring their cat's fecal sample in.  That afternoon was an exciting one with double bact and another viro lecture (sarcasm).
On Wednesday, our path class was canceled since our teacher's flight was delayed, so  it was a full day of bact (lab in the morning, double class in the afternoon).  I studied viro with a few people after class and then had a pharm tutor session.  I also stopped by the Wedge on the way home b/c I've been craving chips and salsa all week! Yum!
I went to the gym as usual on Thursday morning, but then I ran to the bank and the store as well.  There was a surgery club lunch and learn about Prophylactic Gastropexy which was pretty interesting.  I applied and got the aviary manager position I applied for.  I am one of the three people that will be taking care of the birds in our campus aviary, cleaning it out, and helping to schedule the 4th semesters for the aviary rotation.  I am very excited to get started!
Sadly, Friday is not the start of my weekend as it usually is.  I have another research information meeting at lunch, a meeting with my path teacher, and a quick game of volleyball so then I can study the rest of the night.
This whole weekend I will be studying for three tests with a few review sessions, and PAWS' second adoption day on Saturday.

FINALS

This weekend was full of studying as well as the meeting for the dog walking on Sunday.  I picked up some PAWS food donations as well.  The food prices for PAWS are increasing next semester and since we have so many pets in the program, we were hoping the current 7th semesters would donate the food they don't need since they are leaving.  We were able to get 8 bags of dog food and 9 bags of cats food so far.
Monday was full of studying, of course!  I also did dog walking in the morning for a 25EC gift certificate.  Yay!
My Physio final was on Tuesday.  No matter what the outcome is, I am done with 2nd semester!  I treated myself to a massage and drinks on the beach :) Today was also the 6 year anniversary of  the VT shootings.

On Wednesday, I dropped Alex off at the airport at 5am, had dog walking, set up room for PAWS cats, received some more food donations and started packing a bit.
On Thursday, I again had dog walking, put cats in room for break, went to Shipwreck beach, and then stayed for end of semester party.  The semester is officially over for everyone!
Friday I leave for South Africa for two weeks!  I'm incredibly excited; this is something I've wanted to do my whole life and I finally get the opportunity to do it!  I won't have access to internet, so I will post all about it along with hopefully tons of pictures when I get back!

Kittens

This past weekend I had some beach time and I also went and saw the Oz movie.  I also went and picked up two kittens that we are bringing into the PAWS program.

On Tuesday, I received a travel journal that started with a third grade girl in FL.  I'm so excited to be a part of it for her!  Now to figure out who to send it to...hmmm...
I registered for classes for next semester on Wednesday.  I will be taking virology, bacteriology, pharmacology, pathology, and animal behavior.  The end of the semester cannot come soon enough! 34 days!
Thursday, I went to the post office to mail the travel journal.  It was a very different experience, since the post office doesn't sell mailing supplies, just stamps.  I also got a package from Laura full of yummy treats and a cute frame/poster!  I then had donkey research that night.
Friday was volleyball and studying for Monday's exam.
This weekend is our last adoption day of the semester, let's hope someone finds a home! I won't be able to go to the adoption day though because I will be at scuba on our first ocean dive!  Wish me luck!

I had a fun weekend full of a little pool time, some volleyball (even though we lost), dancing, relaxing, and the Superbowl.  Here was the joke in St. Kitts about the Superbowl:

On Monday, I got lots of emails about several kittens that needed homes, so I was emailing around to see who I could bring into the PAWS program.  I was also able to Skype with Bethany that night!
Tuesday, I had donkey research and a few more emails about kittens.  I watched movies most of the day....lazy lazy.
Wednesday was Alex's birthday, so we hung out at the beach for the afternoon and then went to dinner at Sprat's!
Thursday was another lazy day, but I still got some studying done.  Thank you to Kristen and Jenna for my cards!  I love them!  Thank you for thinking of me!
 Friday, I had some more donkey research and volleyball that afternoon, along with Liz's suprise birthday dinner at Serendipity. 
 This weekend I will probably do some cleaning, studying, and pool time!

Sunday consisted of studying and cleaning.

Physiology test was on Monday!
Tuesday wasn't too exciting other than classes, however that night I did attempt ceaser dressing and pasta with vodka-cream sauce.  It turned out pretty well! I was impressed!
On Wednesday I didn't have class until 9am, but I went to school at the usual time to get an early gym session in.  I ran to the bank and got my oil changed before afternoon classes.  I also bought my flight, registration, and hotel for the LSU student conference!  Yay so excited!
On Thursday, It was the last day of my photo challenge!  I cannot believe I kept up with it for one year!  It's time for something else though.
Friday, February 1st! It's seriously February already?  I have donkey research testing from 9-11am and then volleyball.

This weekend I have more donkey research  and I will probably spend some time at the beach or pool!
